Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent

Objective:

To be able to simulate a controlled emergency swimming ascent for at least 30 ft.

Value:

In the unlikely event that you should run low or out of air and you're not close enough to use your buddy's alternate air source, you may want to employee this safety technique to get to the surface.

Steps to Perform:
  1. Deflate your BCD
  2. Extend your BCD inflator hose, with finger on the deflate button, above your head
  3. Extend your right hand above your head to protect it from overhead objects [e.g. boats]
  4. Take in and let out three breaths [voluntary hyperventilation]
  5. After the third breath is inhaled, begin making an AHHHHH sound [exhaling & making bubbles, slightly]
  6. Begin kicking at a controlled [NON panic/rapid pace]
  7. Continue kicking, releasing any air from your BCD, protecting your head with your hand and making an AHHHH sound until you reach the surface [or 30ft]
